Remembering Roland
The Scouting
community mourned Roland’s death and just over a fortnight later a memorial
parade of thousands of Scouts made its way through the East End. For many years this was an annual event and
the original grave marker was preserved by East London Scouts.
His legacy has
not been forgotten by East End Scouts.
Roland’s house provided a Headquarters for East London Scouts for over
60 years and its sale generated funds to buy the present day Headquarters named
“Roland Philipps Scout Centreâ€. A fund to support Scouting in the area was also
set up, and continues today supporting young East Londoners with the cost of
purchasing badges, attending camps and other activities. His generosity is still enabling young people
to enjoy all the adventures Scouting has to offer.
To mark the centenary of the Battle of
the Somme The Scout Association Heritage Service worked in partnership with The
Fusilier Museum and East London Scouts to tell Roland’s story to a wider audience. The outcome, an exhibition “Roland Philipps: Scout, Soldier, Somme†was
produced by a team of community curators.
